Dental Exam
Roswell, GA

Woman getting a general dental exam from doctor at Reich Dental Center – Roswell.According to the American Dental Association, adults and children should get a dental exam every six months or when needed. Dental exams are essential to maintain the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth.

What are Dental Exams Used For

At Reich Dental Center – Roswell, one of our doctors will examine your mouth for signs of oral disease or factors that could affect your oral health – and ultimately, your overall health.

Here are some of the things that we watch out for during your dental exam:
•  Decayed, damaged or missing teeth.
•  Small cavities in initial stages.
•  The health of your gums, including looking for deep pockets, bleeding, inflammation and other signs of gum disease.
•  To check the condition of dental restorations like fillings, root canals, dental crowns, and dental implants.
•  Your bite and the spacing between your teeth.
•  Check your teeth for stains and discoloration.
•  Signs of bruxism or teeth clenching.
•  Bleeding or inflammation in your palate or tongue.
•  The health of your temporomandibular joints.
•  Early indications of oral cancers, like abnormal cysts or suspicious lesions.

What Does a Dental Exam Involve?

A dental exam involves various steps:
•  Medical History Review: Firstly, we will ask you questions about any health problems or medications that you take and discuss how they may impact your oral health. For example, people with systemic or autoimmune diseases are at increased risk of gum diseases. Some medications may cause dry mouth that can lead to dental caries. If you wear any dental prostheses, we will examine them and see if they need any adjustments. We may also educate you on the correct way to brush and floss your teeth and what dietary changes to make to ensure the continued health of your mouth.
•  Digital X-rays: We utilize the most advanced digital x-rays at Reich Dental Center – Roswell. We may also recommend a few digital x-rays, though it may not be necessary at every dental examination. Digital x-rays emit low levels of radiation, so they are even safe for young children and pregnant women. Even so, we will only take your x-rays if it is absolutely necessary.
•  Oral Cancer Screening: Oral cancer screening is performed to identify early signs of mouth cancer. This is typically done in two steps: the visual exam and the physical exam. During the visual exam, we will look for suspicious bumps, abnormal cysts, rough and rigid lesions, persistent bleeding in an area of the mouth, and other anomalies in your mouth. During the physical exam, we will use our fingers to feel the inside of your lips and cheek, the sides of your tongue, palate and floor of the mouth, the sides of your neck, and underneath your jaw and chin for any strange growths or lumps.
•  Dental Impressions: We may also recommend dental impressions of your jaw to check if your bite is correct or to prepare a whitening tray or an oral appliance for you.

After your dental exam, we will discuss the findings with you and will recommend preventive measures and treatments to improve your oral health. If you experience some changes in your mouth or have not been to a dentist in a while, call us at 770-992-3353 and schedule a dental exam appointment today.
