When Do You Need Dental Crowns?

A dental crown can be of use in the following situations:
•  To prevent a decayed and weakened tooth from crumbling.
•  To restore the form and function of a broken down tooth.
•  To cover a prepared tooth that has undergone endodontic treatment (root canal).
•  To hold a traditional or Cantilever dental bridge into place.
•  To sit atop a dental implant.
•  To make cosmetic modifications, like tooth lengthening.
•  For patients who want a full smile makeover, and are adding cosmetic services like teeth whitening to their dental crown procedures.

Permanent and Temporary Dental Crowns

Permanent Crowns

Permanent crowns are made from gold, white gold, all-ceramic, all-resin, and porcelain-fused-to-metal.

Gold or platinum crowns are the most durable and strongest types of crown. Gold is highly malleable and can be molded to make crowns with a thin surface, which means less tooth preparation is required. These metallic crowns are the best options for restoring back teeth as they can withstand a large amount of pressure. Some people do not prefer their metallic color, but others like the gold color and flaunt gold crowns on their front teeth.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are also quite strong and have an added benefit of matching your natural tooth. However, the porcelain portion of the crown can break off and the underlying metal can show through as a dark line. These crowns work well for back teeth and for holding bridges.

All-porcelain crowns are the most natural-looking crown, though they are less strong than metal-based crowns. They are more suitable for people with metal allergies.

All-resin crowns are the most affordable type of crowns but are prone to wear and tear. They also do not last as long as metal-based crowns.

Temporary Crowns

While your permanent crown is being made in the dental lab, we may fit your tooth with a temporary dental crown. These crowns may be made from acrylic material and are only designed to last a few weeks to a few months at best.

Sometimes stainless steel crowns may also be used as temporary crowns on adult teeth. For children, a stainless steel crown serves as a protective covering to prevent a baby tooth from further decay and damage. When the baby tooth falls off, the stainless steel crown also falls off with it.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns can last for decades depending on the material used. All-metal crowns are the most durable and can last from 20 to 40 years. Porcelain-fused-with-metal crowns may last you for 15 to 20 years. Porcelain crowns can last 10 years or more with proper dental care. All-resin crowns may last 7 to 10 years.

The longevity of your dental crown also depends on your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits. If you allow plaque to accumulate, it can re-infect your tooth, leading to another root canal procedure. Habits like jaw clenching, chewing on ice, biting your fingernails, and using your teeth to open packages, can also damage your crown.
