Night Mouth Guard
Roswell, GA

nightguards at Reich Dental Center - Roswell Bruxism or teeth clenching while sleeping affects about 30 to 40 million children and adults in the United States. Although not life-threatening, this disorder can lead to painful symptoms like chronic TMJ pain, migraines, and fractured teeth. It also leads to poor sleep quality as well as negative repercussions for your overall health.

Negative Effects of Bruxism

Here are some of the common consequences of nocturnal teeth grinding:
•  Chipped and fractured teeth.
•  Loss of enamel, leading to sensitive and yellowing teeth.
•  Gum recession.
•  Temporomandibular joint disorders or jaw pain.
•  Migraines and morning headaches.

A number of other serious disorders are closely linked with bruxism. It is not clear whether teeth grinding causes these conditions, but people with bruxism are at a higher risk of these:
•  Chronic kidney disease.
•  Restless leg syndrome.
•  Sleep apnea.
•  Depression and anxiety.
•  Gastroesophageal reflux disease.
•  Behavioral issues in children and adolescence.

If you are suffering from any of the above conditions, our doctors at Reich Dental Center – Roswell may recommend you the use of a night mouthguard.

Types of Night Mouthguard

Below are the most commonly used night mouthguards:

Over-the-Counter Mouth Guards

These mouthguards can be purchased at various pharmacies and come very cheap. Some night mouthguards come in a one-size-fits-all variety, but these devices are ill-fitting and uncomfortable, and do not provide protection to the teeth and jaw. As a result, we strongly discourage their use.

Another type, the boil-and-bite mouthguards come in the form of a plastic u-shaped tray which can assume the shape of your teeth once it is boiled, placed in the mouth and then bitten. Despite claims of customization, these mouthguards are not as comfortable as custom-fitted mouthguards.

Custom-Fitted Night Mouthguards

Custom-fitted mouthguards are professionally made at Reich Dental Center – Roswell to fit the unique shape of your mouth and address your individual dental need. These mouthguards are created in a dental lab based on a mold of your teeth.

Custom-fitted mouthguards are made of durable and rigid plastic and can last a very long time. They also help to address your bruxism and snoring issues in the best way.

NTI Mouthguards

The nociceptive trigeminal inhibition splint or NTI mouthguards are a type of small night mouthguard that is designed to only cover your front top and bottom teeth. It is based on the principle that preventing the front teeth from meeting can keep your back teeth from grinding together and reduce the pressure on your jaw.

One of its drawbacks is that it does not protect the entire arch of your teeth. Holding only the front teeth may cause misalignment issues in the long run. This may lead to you having orthodontic treatment in the future. The best option is to get a night mouthguard that covers the entire row of your teeth.

Note that no matter what type of mouthguard you use, it will not last forever. Custom-fitted mouthguard last the longest and it may be a few years before you need to replace them.
