Oral Cancer: The Signs

Oral Cancer: The SignsWe all are afraid of cancer. No one wants to think about the disease and what it might mean for us or our families. While most people think of lung cancer or breast cancer first, there are other cancers that warrant attention too.

One such cancer is oral cancer. It might not get the attention others do, but it can still be serious. This cancer can strike all tissues of the mouth. It can damage lips, gums, tongue, and even the jawbone. Perhaps the worst part of oral cancer is the fact it can easily spread to other areas of the body. Just beneath the lower jawbone are lymph nodes. If cancer infects them, it can spread throughout the body by way of the lymphatic system.

The good news is there are things that can help identify oral cancer early. One way is through self-examination. Think about it. After you finish brushing and flossing your teeth, just take a look around your mouth. Pull down your lower and upper lip, looking for dark patches or odd tissue growths. Do the same to look at the inside of your cheek. Lift your tongue and look beneath for the same thing. It might look like you're making faces at yourself, but it is important.

If you notice any discolored patches or strange tissue growths, it's important to have it evaluated. It's important to not panic if you do find anything. The vast majority of odd-looking tissue is not cancerous.

In Conclusion


Rather than living in fear of oral cancer, why not do something about it? Screen yourself every morning and every night. Also, when you go in for your cleanings twice a year, have them do an oral cancer screening for you. Remember, the earlier illnesses are discovered, the better the outcome.
