Decay Can Lead Your Teeth to Breaking Below the Gumline

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Office
Decay Can Lead Your Teeth to Breaking Below the GumlineTooth decay is the number one dental issue in most dental offices. When tooth decay starts to affect your teeth, there are a number of complications that could happen in your mouth. Unfortunately, tooth decay can lead to your teeth breaking below the gumline.

Tooth Decay and Your Mouth

To understand how eating and drinking affect your teeth, you have to understand what happens after consuming them. When you eat foods or drink beverages that contain simple carbohydrates or refined sugars, these foods tend to stick to your teeth and linger in your mouth. These leftover food and sugars from the drinks break down into sugar. Next, bacteria in your mouth eat the sugar off your teeth. The bacteria produce an acid as a byproduct that attacks the enamel of your teeth. The enamel, which is the hard, shiny surface of your tooth, is easily weakened and decalcified by these acidic waste deposits left by the bacteria. Tooth decay affects the whole tooth.

Untreated tooth decay also destroys the inside of the tooth. The inside of the tooth is called the pulp. Inside the pulp is where you have nerves. It is possible before your tooth breaks below the gumline that you would feel something uncomfortable in that tooth as the nerves become affected by the decay. Untreated cavities can lead to tooth decay, which can cause a tooth to break below the gumline.
