How Mouthwash Can Keep Your Mouth Healthier

Posted on 2/20/2020 by Office
How Mouthwash Can Keep Your Mouth HealthierEveryone knows you should brush and floss at least twice a day. But that really isn't enough. That toothbrush can't get everywhere. You really should be using a mouthwash every day as well for maximum oral hygiene care.

The Power of an Antimicrobial Mouthwash

Rinsing isn't just to keep your breath smelling minty clean. It is the key to keeping your entire mouth clean. The truth is that brushing alone pretty much only reaches about 25-30% of your mouth. It is the power of the swish that fights the bacteria in the whole mouth – both teeth and gums.

But for maximum effectiveness, you really should be swishing at least twice a day for deep-clean effectiveness. The germs are in your mouth all day long, they never take a break, so neither can you. One swish of mouthwash lasts about 12 hours. So, if you swish every morning and every evening for about 30 seconds, you have added so much to your oral hygiene and overall health.

The longer you continue to use a mouthwash and not just any mouthwash, but an antimicrobial mouthwash and use it for 30 seconds at least twice a day with continued use you will see long term results. Bacteria and plaque are killed within about 30 seconds of coming into contact with a mouthwash.

If you are already experiencing severe gum disease there is a whole range of ADA approved mouthwash products that are good for whatever stage or oral health care you are in. There are products for enamel, for brushing, flossing, some just for gingivitis, some that just fight plaque. If you are not in the habit of using a mouthwash rinse in your daily routine, please contact a dentist about doing so.

If you are unsure about which product you should be using or how you should be using the product, please feel free to call our office at any time. We have a list of approved ADA mouthwashes and would be glad to give you our personal recommendations as well.
