Can You Wear a Mouth Guard with Braces?

Posted on 11/15/2019 by Office
Can You Wear a Mouth Guard with Braces?Mouth guards are an essential part of any athlete's protective equipment when playing sports. They are very helpful at keeping teeth safe from impact, and they can be bought most anywhere.

Because sports are so popular for many youths, it's common for us to be asked if you really need a mouth guard when wearing braces. Yes! You do need a mouth guard—even if you have braces.

Though braces are made of durable materials, they can still be broken quite easily. We have seen a lot of damaged braces in the past. You wouldn't believe how easy it is for braces to get snagged on a jersey and get ripped off. However, a more important question than do you need a mouth guard when playing sports is what kind of mouth guard you should get.

Types Of Mouth Guards

Mouth guards come in three varieties. Two varieties are commonly found in retail stores and sporting goods stores. These two varieties are typically called stock and boil-and-bite. Both of these types offer protection; however, they leave a lot lacking.

Because these mouth guards are one-size-fits-all, they generally don't fit that well, and they may even be useless for people with braces because most of these guards are meant for teeth without braces.

To truly get the best protection for your teeth, you will need to get a custom mouth guard. Custom mouth guards can be fitted to your teeth and be made to fit comfortably for people who have braces. Custom mouth guards are a little more expensive than the over-the-counter types, but replacing a new set of braces is even more expensive.

Luckily, we offer custom mouth guards at our office. We'll make sure to get an exact match for your teeth so that the athlete of your family gets the most protection possible. Give us a call if you're interested!
