Are crowns better than dental fillings?

The first way is using crowns, while the other way is using dental fillings. Both ways are effective in preventing tooth decay, however, learning the difference between the two will allow you to narrow down to the best choice for your case.

Crowns

A crown is made of ceramic. It is a prosthetic tooth placed on top of the existing tooth. It is used if the existing tooth is damaged to prevent further damage. Crowns look like natural teeth and they improve your facial aesthetics. They also help you when it comes to chewing and speaking, therefore you do not have to lose your self-esteem due to a damaged tooth.

In what cases are crowns used?

Crowns are designed for use on teeth that have undergone extensive damage. To be precise, for a crown to work better, at least 25% of your tooth cannot be affected. If the tooth is not enough to provide the support, you should opt for the composite resin. It is a material that can be applied in layers to build the remaining tooth structure. Once the layer hardens, the dentist can successfully place the crown.

Fillings

Dental fillings are made from different materials. Some are made from silver, porcelain, and composite resin. The filling is inserted into the cavities. If the fillings are well inserted, it can last for a lifetime. They prevent your teeth from further decay.

The difference

Dental fillings are used for teeth that have less damage, while crowns are used where there is extensive tooth decay. For a crown, it is bonded to the top of the tooth while the filling is inserted into the tooth itself. To protect your tooth against cavities and other problems, call our offices today.
