How Long Do Dental Implants Last?Dental implants are devices that are inserted into the jaw. A dental surgeon usually inserts these implants surgically. They help with chewing and our overall appearance and are essential for replacing any damaged or lost teeth. Additionally, dental implants also offer support for artificial teeth such as dentures or crowns.

Implants help to improve a person's quality of life. They also help to prevent the shrinking of the bone due to bone loss and help to keep nearby teeth stable. However, just like with any other surgery, there is always a risk of failure or complications with the implants.

How Long Do the Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are a permanent solution for any lost or damaged teeth. This is because the dentist inserts them into the jaw. Thus, they are supposed to last for nearly 20 or 30 years. It is important to know that the period will depend on how well you take care of your teeth. If you want your implants to last a long time, then you will need to take good care of them, just as you would with your normal teeth.

Factors Influencing the Longevity of Dental Implants

As stated earlier, dental implants are supposed to last you a lifetime. However, there are several factors that may interfere with how long your dental implants will last these include;

Inexperienced Surgeon

If your dentist does not insert your implants correctly, it will contribute to the failure of the implants. Thus, it is vital that you choose a dental surgeon who is not only qualified on paper but one who has experience in the field. There are several ways that a surgeon can contribute to implant failure. These include; wrong placement of the implant, poorly designed implant and even attaching of the crown before the implant is stable.

Teeth Grinding

If you are in the habit of grinding your teeth, then it is likely that your implants will not last for a long time. Grinding of teeth can cause trauma to the implant affecting the healing process.

Improper Maintenance

It is important to take care of your implants, just as you would with your normal teeth. If you do not brush and floss daily, it may lead to the accumulation of plaque, which will cause gum diseases.

As stated earlier, dental implants are supposed to last for a very long time. Thus, it is important to take care of them. A big part of taking care of your dental implants is to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily to prevent any infections. Additionally, make sure to keep up with your dental appointments.
