What Are Orthodontic Emergencies?

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Office
What Are Orthodontic Emergencies?Orthodontic treatment is an effective way to align your bite. While you might implement proper care and maintenance for your orthodontic appliances, accidents can occur, and you may need quick attention. Orthodontic emergencies are dental issues that happen unexpectedly. These problems come without warning and can cause pain and discomfort. In this case, it is vital to understand common orthodontic emergencies and ways to fix them.

Loose Brackets or Wires

Loose brackets or wires are the most common orthodontic emergencies. Even though the adhesive for attaching the brackets to the teeth is sturdy, it can become loose over time. This may result from eating hard or sticky foods. In addition, the wires that put pressure on the teeth can break, causing damage to the cheeks. A good way to relieve pain is by bending the wires against the tooth using tweezers. However, this is only a temporary solution. You may need to consult an orthodontist soon to replace the wires and reattach the brackets.

Food Stuck Between the Tooth and the Band

Sometimes food debris can get stuck in the braces, causing pain and discomfort. The pain can become severe, and you might find it challenging to eat or speak. In some situations, removing the particles by flossing and brushing may be difficult. Luckily, you can contact a dentist and schedule an appointment the same day to make you feel comfortable.

Severe Pain

It is normal to experience pain after orthodontic appliance placement. The pain results from pressure applied to the teeth to allow them to move to a new position. Sometimes, you might experience soreness or tenderness that can last for a few days. However, severe pain and mouth sores may indicate that something is wrong. This may result from rubbing irritation or injury. An orthodontist may fix this issue by adjusting the braces and applying anesthetic gel in the mouth to heal the sores and provide relief.

Whether you or one of your family members experiences orthodontic emergencies, it is good to stay calm and contact a professional. Set up an appointment with our orthodontists and fix the issues related to orthodontic appliances.
