Ways that Your Mouth Will Tell You that You are Doing a Bad Job BrushingWe can tell when people know how to brush their teeth and when people do not really know how to brush properly. If you have continual dental complaints, we need to know more about how you brush your teeth.

Correct and Incorrect Ways to Brush

If you do not brush your teeth correctly, it will show in your mouth. Whenever you brush your teeth, you need to angle your toothbrush. Make sure you cover all the surfaces – not just the outside and chewing surfaces. The insides of the teeth also need to be brushed. When brushing the teeth, move the brush up vertically from the lower teeth and vertically downward from the upper teeth. You also need to use small circular motions on each chewing surface. Never brush your teeth using a see-saw motion.

Signs that You are Brushing Too Hard

You should always use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth. Never use a medium- or firm-bristled brush, as this can wear down the enamel quickly. Also, use gentle motions, as brushing too hard can lead to erosion, which can trigger dental stains. Some people think it is more effective to "scrub" their teeth. However, taking this approach can do more harm than good. If you have a tendency to brush your teeth too hard, buy a round and soft-bristled electronic toothbrush with sensors endorsed by the American Dental Association (ADA). The sensors will warn you when you are brushing too hard.

Use Only a Pea-size Amount of a Fluoride Toothbrush

Your teeth will display signs of decay or erosion if you use too much toothpaste on your brush. You only need to use a pea-sized amount to brush your teeth effectively. Also, stay away from mouthwashes that contain alcohol, as they can dry out your mouth, which can lead to dental decay and disease. What you use and how you brush can both impact your dental health.

How do your teeth and gums look? If you brush at least twice a day but have erosion and decay, you may be doing things wrong. Give us a call to set up a dental appointment today. We can show you how to correctly brush and floss your teeth to maintain good dental health.
